We made it up into Tracy Arm today. What a beautiful place! It’s nice to see these types of places in my daily routine again. I’m afraid that I don’t have the ability to fully explain in words how this place looks. Literally amazing. The Sawyer and South Sawyer glaciers were both looking good in the distance, and we had the place pretty much to ourselves.
We finished off the day with some bow riding Dahl’s porpoises. They move so fast! It’s hard to keep track of them, because they can go nearly 3 times faster than we can. They sure are fun to watch, with their black and white colors streaking through the water.
Second day at work went pretty well. Thankfully the ship is in great shape, and it’s looking like this rotation is going to be a fairly un-eventful ride. Really I just have quite a bit of the usual maintenance and cleaning ahead of me. Maybe I can get some off the boat time in this go around.
Today being my first day back was pretty good. A million changes happening to staff, as usual. The faces stay similar, people work their way up quickly, but the new people at the bottom are always coming. It seems that there is either a one year shelf life on the career, or a person sticks with it for years and years. Since I’ve been working for the company over a year now, I may be falling into the later of the two.
I will say that it’s great to be back in the land of milk and honey. Free food is good food, and a roof over my head that I’m not paying for is great. I guess that I actually do pay for these things, they are considered part of the salary, but it still feels nice to have no real worries.
Tomorrow morning when I wake up we should be well into Tracy Arm, which is one of my favorite places we go. It ought to be interesting to see just how much the glaciers have receded this past year. I’m looking forward to watching the boat pick its way up into the Arm through the icebergs. This early in the year, I’m sure there will be a ton of them. Pictures tomorrow, I promise!
I’m in Juneau now, and all is fairly well. The airline lost my luggage, which I’m not surprised about at all. I sure hope I get it before we leave town tonight.
I went and took a look at the boat last night and all seems to be looking good. There’s been extra people on the last couple of weeks to get things fixed up and so I’m hoping that I’ll have a fairly mild rotation. Just fine with me.
I’ll post another report later, but for now, it’s back to work….
Since I couldn’t go on a vacation to Moab this week, I decided to get some work done. I’ve been writing quite a bit, and that’s good, plus working on things for this website. I found a logo that I need to somehow get onto the website. WordPress is a great program, but I’m still struggling a bit with customizing it like I want. Maybe I can get it to work today!
I’m getting pretty close to being done with the divorce now. I have a class to go to tomorrow night, then file the proof I took it with the court and hopefully I’ll be done! I will NEVER go through this again. Boy o boy, did I screw up! Lessons learned, right?
I’m in the market, and doing research, for some mapping software now. I’m not quite sure what is good, but I’m looking. Like I said before, I need to get more informed on the GPS thing, it’s time.
Nothing ever turns out like planned. I guess that’s the joy of life, right?
I’ll be hanging out in Orem for the rest of the week, no Moab trip for me. I could have done it, but money would have been tight for a while, and I couldn’t let that happen. I’ve got too much else going on right now, and I had better be careful.
I started planning my summer trip and made a page here about it. You can find that on the right under the link for “Tahoe to Moab and Back” and I am looking for information or thoughts on the trip. If you have any ideas of cool places to visit along this route or alternative routes, drop me a line.
Also, if you would like to meet up with me for part of the journey, I would love to work that out as well. You can email me at clay@atlastrekker.com.
For now I wait ’till Saturday for my next travel, and plan for the summer.
I’m in the planning stages now of a trip that will take place for the most part during the month of July this year. Work and school schedules will dictate timing, but the idea is to spend a month making a big loop starting in Lake Tahoe, California with a turnaround point being Moab, Utah. I’ll be traveling with my 6 year old daughter who is as good a camp companion as any adult and we will be traveling with only one vehicle, my 1979 Toyota 4×4. The plan is to travel for a few hours a day, or possibly several hours with a day or two to rest and to take a leisurely stroll around the west. I would prefer to stay off of Interstates as much as possible, but am not really looking for any kind of hard core wheeling either.
Here’s my Proposed Route:
Yosemite National Park
Sequoia National Park
Death Valley
Valley of Fire
Zion Canyon
Lake Powell (I heard that there were some sand dunes here worth finding)
Moab, Utah
Ely, Nevada (mines and caverns)
Sand Mountain, Nevada
Pyramid Lake, Nevada
Gold Lake and the Sierra Buttes, CA
